Viruses and other froms of malware can run the gamut from harmless hoaxes to mean, nasty, and destructive parasites.
Computer Economics estimates the damage caused by malicious code attacks to be in
the tens of billions of dollars every year. New viruses are being created daily
making it almost impossible to keep up even if you have the latest anti-virus software.
Some viruses can be cleaned from your system and others require wiping clean your hard
drive and starting over. The best defense against viruses is to a good
backup system.
Unfortunately many of us do not keep up with our backups or even make backups at all.
